An Compassion of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my companion was interested in starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had booked a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
